Regarding nitrate and nitrite testing in drinking water
2023 10 26
From November 1, 2023, pregnant women or parents (guardians) of infants up to 6 months old, or their authorized representatives, must directly contact the National Public Health Center under the Ministry of Health (NVSC) for nitrate and nitrite contamination tests of drinking water if they consume water from individual dug wells or boreholes shallower than 50 meters deep.
The pregnant woman, the person raising an infant up to 6 months old, or their authorized representative must submit a request to the NVSC along with the following documents:
1) A copy of the borehole passport (if the borehole is registered in the Earth’s Crust Register);
2) A copy of the authorization for the pregnant woman / the person raising the infant up to 6 months old to submit this request and receive all information related to the nitrate and nitrite tests of the drinking water (if submitted by an authorized person);
3) A copy of the document confirming pregnancy / the identity and age of the infant;
4) A copy of the identity document of the applicant (if the request is submitted by mail).
NVSC specialists will organize the water test, assess the environment of the dug well or borehole, and, along with the information about the concentration of nitrites and nitrates in the drinking water, provide information on the prevention of nitrate and nitrite poisoning, as well as recommendations for the maintenance of the dug well or borehole.
For further inquiries, please call +370 5 264 9676, email info@nvsc.lt, or visit the NVSC regional office where the dug well or borehole is located.
