More women will have the opportunity to get screened for breast cancer
2024 11 27
The Ministry of Health announces that from January 1, 2025, the age limits for the breast cancer early detection program will be expanded. Women aged 45 to 74 (inclusive) will be invited for preventive screening. This decision is made in line with the European Commission's recommendations under the document "A New EU Approach to Cancer Screening," which was also approved by the National Health Insurance Council.
Until December 31, 2024, the breast cancer early detection program was aimed at women aged 50 to 69. However, starting from 2025, the program will include more than 149,000 women insured with mandatory health insurance, ensuring even broader access to health screening. The expansion of the age limits will require about 3.5 million euros annually from the National Health Insurance Fund, but it will allow for better care of the population's health and early disease detection.
Women participating in the program will be able to undergo a mammogram and its evaluation free of charge every two years. This service will be funded by the National Health Insurance Fund, so it will be provided free of charge to insured women.
In Lithuania, oncological diseases are the second leading cause of death after cardiovascular diseases. The highest cancer mortality rate is observed in the working-age group of 45–64-year-olds. Approximately 1,500 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed annually in the country. Early detection is one of the most important factors in ensuring effective treatment and preventing severe consequences.
Take care of your health – participate in prevention programs!
