Drivers are given an additional year to check their health

In order for drivers to have enough time to check their health and for healthcare institutions to manage the increased patient flow, the implementation of the legal provision linking the validity of the driver’s license to the validity of the medical certificate has been postponed until January 1, 2025. This proposal was approved by the Seimas on December 21.

As of January 1, 2024, an amendment to the Road Traffic Safety Act was set to come into force, linking the validity of a driver’s license to the validity of the driver’s medical certificate. This means that once the medical certificate expires, the driver’s license will also become invalid, regardless of the validity date printed on the license. After the health check, the license validity will be automatically renewed.

According to the Road Transport Vehicle Registry data, at the end of last year, there were about 245,000 individuals without a valid driver’s health check certificate. This means that, starting January 1, 2024, these individuals' driver’s licenses would be deemed invalid, and they would not be allowed to participate in public traffic. By postponing the implementation of the new regulation by one year, drivers whose medical certificates have expired will have time to recheck their health by January 1, 2025.
